AssangeDAO holds to Julian Assange’s belief: “If wars can be started by lies, peace can be started by truth.” Our mission is peace: to support work that resolves conflict and builds understanding, and to sustain the worldwide solidarity that helped win Assange his freedom, so that no one who speaks up for peace has to stand alone.
Our principle: we neither support nor oppose any political party, government, or candidate.
‘One of the best ways to achieve justice is to expose injustice.’
— Julian Assange
Julian was released from Belmarsh on 24 June 2024 and landed home in Australia on 26 June. AssangeDAO raised 16,593 ETH for his defence through the Clock NFT auction; the funds went to the Wau Holland Foundation for that purpose.
AssangeDAO mobilised in a Telegram group on 10 December 2021, after the United States won its appeal against a British court ruling that had blocked Julian Assange’s extradition. Assange’s brother Gabriel Shipton joined the group and shared news of an upcoming NFT collaboration between Julian and the artist Pak.
Inspired by FreeRossDAO, which had raised significant funds for Ross Ulbricht, the community raised 16,593 ETH (about US$52.85 million at the time) for Julian’s defence, through a bid on the 1/1 “Clock” NFT from the Censored collection. The bid won when the auction closed on 9 February 2022. As WikiLeaks announced that day, all funds were to go to aid his defence; they went to his legal defence and campaign through the Wau Holland Foundation.
The Clock NFT is a dynamic 1/1 that originally counted the days Assange had spent in prison. When he landed home free in Australia on 26 June 2024, the piece updated to count the days he has been free. The open-edition Censored NFTs, which had been minted with strikethrough lines, were also updated to remove the lines after his release.
AssangeDAO is a multilingual collective governed by holders of the $JUSTICE token. The original freedom mission is complete. The mission now is peace.
